Winter Skin Care Common Tips

In order to enjoy this season to the fullest and to avoid the harsh effects of weather on your skin you need to take certain precautions.

Drink water:
Water is important no matter what time of year it is, but it is extremely important in the winter. Drinking plenty of water everyday would ensure that your skin remains soft, supple and well-hydrated. Internal hydration keeps skin cells plump and healthy. Water also helps transport nutrients to skin cells, keeping them nourished. If water is boring, have herbal teas or fruit juices. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, which are dehydrating.
Moisturize:
A good moisturizer, suitable for your skin type, is a must in winter to keep skin lubricated. Choose a highly protective day cream which contains zinc oxide, and provides SPF30 protection. Also make sure it is oil based moisturizer because the skin doesn’t produce adequate oils in winter. Lanolin, vitamin E oils, and avocado oils are perfect for absorbing moisture and retaining it in the skin. Applying moisturizer after taking a shower will help to keep the moisture in and the dryness out.
Exfoliate:
Your skin diminishes its oil production in the winter which in turn causes the dry skin. This can lead to premature aging of the skin and fine lines, whilst your skin can appear puffy and grey. Thus you should exfoliate twice a week. This will help to remove dead skin cells and prevent skin from looking dull. Don’t scrub too hard or too long.
Sunscreen:
Many people think that sun is dangerous only in summer, but it’s not true. Don’t say goodbye to your sunscreen just because summer is over. Continue to use your sunscreen with an SPF of 15 that protects against both UVA and UVB. You may want to change to a more hydrating base for your sunscreen for wintertime. This will keep your skin youthful and fresh as it is.
Warm Showers:
Start the day with a lukewarm shower. Keep baths or showers short; limit them to one per day. Avoid harsh (typically colored, fragrant or antibacterial) soaps and stick with mild non-drying soaps. Prolonged hot showers or long hot baths will take away the protecting lipid and fat layers and contribute to skin’s dehydration.
Get more sleep:
Lack of sleep takes toil on your body in the long run. If you don’t get enough sleep, your cells will not be renewed as quickly. This is when degenerative skin aging sets in. It would be ideal if you can get at least seven, if not eight or nine hours of rest a night.
Balanced Diet:
In winter, most important nutrients for the skin are Vitamin C, Vitamin B, Vitamin E, Zinc and Magnesium. By consuming these types of foods, you can help your skin build up a defense along with your regular skin care regiment. Balanced diet for skin care during winter must include fruits and vegetables and plenty of water. Taking a multi-vitamin is also a great way to help your skin along.
Take care of your lips:
Usually lips suffer most during the winter season. Lips get sore and chapped and hands get dry and flaky. You should use a lip balm to keep the lips moisturized and prevent them from drying out. Make sure you choose a lip balm that has AHA and propolis.
Exercise:
Don’t let winter be a hindrance to your daily exercise. Do your daily fitness routine! This keeps you fit and stimulates blood circulation in your whole body and of course your skin.
Winter is harsh on the skin. There is no getting around this fact. So do your best in protecting and treating your skin right. Try and incorporate as many of the above suggestions as you can to keep Vata dosha in balance and your skin looking smooth, soft and beautiful through the dry winter months.
