Fridtjof Nansen's 150th Birthday

Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (10 October 1861 – 13 May 1930) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In his youth a champion skier and ice skater, he led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, and won international fame after reaching record northern latitude of 86°14' during his North Pole expedition of 1893–96. Although he retired from exploration after his return to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.

This Halloween, Watch for Angry Birds

Lock your doors! Shut your windows! Hide your birdseed! This Halloween, the Angry Birds are coming for you! The makers of the hit videogame have launched a line of costumes based on the game's cranky characters. There are outfits for babies, kids, and adults. The baby costumes are cute and relatively inexpensive at around $25. Adults who wish to go as an Angry Bird will have to surrender $49.99 plus shipping, as well as a sizable chunk of their dignity.
Online interest in Angry Birds costumes is already soaring, despite the spooky night being a month away. Over the past 24 hours, Web searches on "angry birds costume" jumped 26%, while related queries on "angry birds halloween costume" and "angry birds costume for sale" tweeted their way to triple-digit gains.
This isn't the first time the Angry Birds franchise has extended its considerable reach. There have been T-shirts, toys, spin-offs, and more. Heck, there have even been unofficial Angry Birds birthday cakes. Clearly, the game inspires a lot of passion.
For those who have been living in a cave without their iPhone, the game is a physics-based puzzler in which the player launches angry birds at various structures in an attempt to knock them over and squash the nefarious pigs. The game has been a tremendous hit on multiple platforms, including Android and Apple's iOS. The game, despite no longer being the new bird on the block, is still tremendously popular in Yahoo! Search, currently ranking in our top 500 overall terms.

9 things guys say should never be fake about you

9 things guys say should never be fake about you

Guys want genuine women in their lives. They want to know who you are and what you’re about right from the start. Women don’t want their guy to change mid-relationship, and guys want the same thing from a partner. Knowing this, I’ve compiled a list of the top nine things that my male listeners and readers feel should never, ever be fake about you:

1. Sharing your man’s interests
Often, women will feign interest in activities that they would never normally do in order to get to the first date with a man and to keep things moving along once they’re seeing each other. Don’t go crazy for his favorite football team, develop a love of white water rafting or suddenly crave Ethiopian food if those things simply are not true to your character. He will eventually see through it or be greatly disappointed when he didn’t get the outdoorsy woman that he always dreamed of once you grow tired of it. A man would rather you admit early on that you’d try something new just for his sake than to act like you absolutely love something that you have totally hated all your life.

Can You Spot the Hidden Images in These Famous Logos?

You’ve seen these famous logos countless times on billboards, passing by on trucks, and at the grocery store, but there is more to them than meets the eye. If you take a closer look, you will find that these recognized logos have hidden images and messages. Check out these inventive designs that cleverly use white space and optical illusions to display subliminal messages.

FedEx

This logo appears to be very simple, but if you look at the white space between the "E" and "x" in “Ex," you'll find it is more complex than you thought. Can you spot the arrow?

Tostitos

These popular party chips are a staple at many backyard BBQs, but chances are, you've never noticed the hidden celebration scene concealed within the letters. The second and third "t’s" are sharing a chip over an "i" that is dotted with a salsa bowl. Yum!

Le Tour de France

Named the world's most famous and prestigious cycling race, bike-lovers and non-cyclists alike are familiar with the event's emblem. However, you might be missing out on the logo's most interesting aspect. After careful examination, you'll notice an image of a person riding a bicycle; the yellow circle is the front wheel and the r is the body.

The weird way I met someone

The weird way I met someone
Ask most men and women how they meet the people they date, and you’ll probably hear answers like “through friends,” “online,” “at a party,” or even “my mom set us up; she has better taste than I thought!” Some people, however, find romance in much more surprising places — and their stories are testament to the fact that if you’re looking for love (keeping common sense and safety in mind, of course!), you should always keep your eyes peeled. Don’t believe us? Check out how these readers ended up clinching a date.

While idling on the freeway of love
“I was stuck in rush hour traffic. There was a new silver Mustang in the lane next to me. Mustang drivers always notice other Mustang drivers, so I pulled up next to him and slowed down so I could get a good look, flashed him a flirty smile, and revved my engine a little. After eight miles of flirting in stop-and-go traffic, he called out, asking whether I would like his number. We dated for three months until I realized the only thing we had in common was our love for our Mustangs. But it sure was fun while it lasted!”

Tips for Longer-Lasting Laptop Batteries

Hardware budgets are feeling the pinch of our tepid economy, and many companies are making employees use their laptops longer. If you are starting to tell your folks to keep plugging along with their laptops for four or five years instead of just three, you might be running into an unexpected expense: dead laptop batteries.

Well, to be fair, your laptop's batteries probably aren't completely dead. But since Lithium Ion batteries tend to lose about 20% of their capacity each year, a typical three-year-old laptop might only get about an hour or so on a charge, which might not even get your folks through an entire meeting. Here are four simple tips to forestall the day that you need to replace those batteries:
Keep it cool. Heat is the primary killer of batteries. Tell your employees to be careful not to let their laptops overheat. One common way that happens is packing a running laptop into a backpack or briefcase. If the laptop fails to go to sleep (and let's face it — sleep glitches are common), then the laptop can get crazy hot in an enclosed space. You can almost smell the loss of battery longevity.

MTV Apparently Wants To Be 29 Forever

On Monday, August 1, MTV turned 30 years old. Media outlets across the country, including Yahoo!, celebrated this auspicious occasion in pop culture. All but ONE media outlet, that is: um, MTV. Like the ungracefully aging Gloria Swanson in Sunset Blvd. or titular character in Logan's Run, MTV bizarrely refused to celebrate its own 30th birthday, and just treated it like any other day.

Found: Messages in Bottles

One year ago, off the coast of Oregon, a ten-year-old boy tossed a message in a bottle into the Pacific Ocean. Weeks ago, a 9-year-old girl in Hawaii found it.

According to a popular article from the AP, Thomas Craig never expected his bottle to arrive safely in anyone's hands. He told West Hawaii Today newspaper, "I couldn't believe someone had found it. I was shocked. When I threw it overboard, it hit the top of my grandpa's boat so I thought it broke and sank. The chances of someone finding it seemed like a once-in-a-million type thing."
His seafaring send-and-receive beat the odds when Trinity Ballesteros of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, saw the bottle washed up on the beach. The note inside read: "Dear finder of my message, my name is Thomas and I live in Oregon. I'm ten years old and this week I'm salmon fishing deep in the ocean. I would like to hear from you."
Trinity responded (via email) to Thomas, who had included his mom's email address. Since then, the two plan to become pen pals (of the digital variety).
But that isn't the only message in a bottle making waves on the Web. Near Florida, a man found another missive that had been floating in glass for 50 years. A hotel owner had put the message out to sea with a note that said anyone who returns the bottle to the hotel will get a $150 reward.
You can watch it below.

Five ways to get a better signal for your cell phone

Are you suffering from too few bars on your cell phone signal? As we increasingly rely on our cell phones to manage daily responsibilities, it becomes more critical to maintain a proper connection.
While standing near a window, turning our phones upside down, and even hopping around in circles on one leg are all things we resort to in hopes of getting a stronger signal, there are several more reliable ways to get better reception on our cell phones.
Here are the five best ways to get a better signal.

1) Keep your batteries charged throughout the day

The easiest and most obvious solution is also the cheapest and most reliable place to start. Our cell phones - particularly smartphones that can access the Internet, video and applications - consume a lot of power when connecting a call. Even if your phone has enough juice to initiate a call, additional power is required to transmit and maintain a reliable signal. While it can vary according to device and carrier, don't be surprised if you experience more dropped calls with a battery that is less than 10 percent full. So before buying expensive equipment, switching carriers or having all of your indoor cell phone conversations under a skylight, try keeping your battery charged throughout the day and see if there is a noticeable improvement.
Gently used extra power cords can be purchased on eBay and other sites for literally a few bucks. So if you don’t want to travel with an extra cord, you can maintain multiple charging centers in areas where you spend the most time on your phone. In your office, plug your phone into a wall socket or through USB to your computer. For the car, purchase an adapter for your cigarette lighter or power socket (also very inexpensive) that will charge your phone as you drive.
Finally, if you like to run a lot of applications on your smartphone, make sure they are fully turned off or at least using the minimal amount of power while in use. Fittingly, there are plenty of apps to help you monitor and preserve battery life available to iPhone and Android smartphone owners.

5 Foods that Keep You Thin

It's true: Apples can help you stay
thin. (Thinkstock)

It's true: Apples can help you stay thin.

Take a look around any book store, and you'll find dozens of diet books lining the shelves. Despite their bright and cheerful covers, with their positive, upbeat claims, many of them are filled with information that promotes all the wrong messages.

"The word 'diet' is negative and implies people can go on and off them," said Jane Korsberg, a senior instructor in the department of nutrition at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Korsberg is one nutritionist who thinks it would be better to re-think the whole concept of dieting.

"'Diet foods' are confusing to many people," she explained. "What diet is the 'diet food' geared for? Is it low-calorie, low-fat, low-sodium, low-sugar, gluten-free, et cetera?"

How to avoid crushing his ego

How to avoid crushing his ego

Men may seem strong and together, but in reality they’re easily crushed, especially if they think they’ve disappointed you. But does his ego-sensitivity mean you’re supposed to swallow hard and say “I love it” when he presents you with a truly awful gift? No. So how do you preserve your sanity and his self-esteem?

First, a little background information. The reasons your most excellent, strong man acts sometimes more like a fragile little boy are rooted, not surprisingly, in childhood.

How Women View the Casual Hookup (And the Rules We Want Men to Follow)

Believe it or not, women are very capable of and enjoy casual relationships, as long as there are no gray areas.
couple in bed
This may come as a shock to a lot of guys, but girls think about sex. A lot. Heck, we crave it – and when we go lengthy times without it, it drives us nuts. So, if we don’t have anyone special in our lives at the moment, we may be just as psyched as guys to travel down the road of casually hooking up with someone. By casual, I mean no commitment, no lovey dovey dates or phone calls, just straightforward, consistent sex with someone.
I know, shocking.
But how women approach casual hookups may be a little different than how guys approach them. Most women see it as a strictly physical thing – a fun means to an end that doesn’t require batteries and actually talks back (ok, that's a bit harsh). Nine times out of ten, we genuinely want to keep it this way, and avoid the confusing, gray areas that come with real relationships. Men may find it hard to believe, but women with the right intentions really do enter casual hookups to just keep things light, fun, and sexy. We like to use Samantha Jones as inspiration.

In order to keep the casual hookup separate from a real relationship, we expect guys to follow a certain set of unspoken, yet extremely important rules. These are all common sense guidelines that keep the sex carefree and string-free. If he breaks these rules, he confuses the sh** out of us, and then the “casual” part flies out the window and suddenly, we don’t know what we’ve gotten ourselves into.
Since no guy (or girl) entering a casual hookup wants that, here are the rules we expect the guy to follow:
1. Don’t call or text unless it’s to hookup.
We don’t want to hear how your day was or worry about your big work deal that just fell through, because we have enough to worry about in our own lives. The reason a casual hookup is so liberating for most women is because we don’t feel the need—at all—to take care of the guy and his problems. He’s not a boyfriend, he’s just the guy we roll around in the sheets with from time to time. The only moment we should be thinking about him is when it’s 1 a.m. on a Friday, we’re wearing our hot lingerie underneath our dress and have had one too many martinis.
2. Be up front and honest.
Casual hookups involve no commitment, which means both parties are allowed to see other people. However, they should be very up front and honest about it, especially if they’re also sleeping with these people. This is a health issue, and a serious one at that! Women expect that if our casual hookup is sleeping around, he will tell us up front so that we can make up our own minds whether or not that’s cool with us. We’re not going to get all jealous, psycho-girlfriendy on him, so there’s no reason for him to lie or omit this really important information.

Aussie student finds universe's 'missing mass'

Aussie student finds universe's 'missing
mass'
SYDNEY (AFP) – A 22-year-old Australian university student has solved a problem which has puzzled astrophysicists for decades, discovering part of the so-called "missing mass" of the universe during her summer break.
Undergraduate Amelia Fraser-McKelvie made the breakthrough during a holiday internship with a team at Monash University's School of Physics, locating the mystery material within vast structures called "filaments of galaxies".
Monash astrophysicist Dr Kevin Pimbblet explained that scientists had
previously detected matter that was present in the early history of the                                                             universe but that could not now be located.

LinkedIn: 4 Biggest Mistakes You're Probably Making

Are you LinkedIn? I admit, I put in a lot more facetime with Facebook. And my experts tell me I'm missing out on opportunities. "Recruiters are using LinkedIn heavily now. You need to be professional — and findable!" says career coach Kimberly Schneiderman, founder of Career City Services.

Indeed, LinkedIn has more than 100 million members, including executives from every Fortune 500 company. LinkedIn's research team recently mined that information to determine the most common names for CEOs. Verdict? Peter, for a man, and Deborah, for a women.
But no matter what your name, LinkedIn can take your networking to the next level with just a little effort. Here are the most common ways people aren't making the most of their presence on the site — and how experts say you can fix that.

Ownership of TV Sets Falls in U.S.

The Nielsen Company, which takes TV set ownership into account when it produces ratings, will tell television networks and advertisers on Tuesday that 96.7 percent of American households now own sets, down from 98.9 percent previously.

There are two reasons for the decline, according to Nielsen. One is poverty: some low-income households no longer own TV sets, most likely because they cannot afford new digital sets and antennas.
The other is technological wizardry: young people who have grown up with laptops in their hands instead of remote controls are opting not to buy TV sets when they graduate from college or enter the work force, at least not at first. Instead, they are subsisting on a diet of television shows and movies from the Internet.
That second reason is prompting Nielsen to think about a redefinition of the term "television household" to include Internet video viewers.

A Guide to Headache Remedies

Bath by Bettijo Relief Organic Stick
Bath by Bettijo Relief
Organic Stick
Head hurts? Try one of these doctor-approved pain relievers.

Relaxation Techniques

Best for: Soothing stress before a headache starts.
How they work: Simple deep breathing and stretching (neck and shoulder rolls, in particular) relax tense muscles that trigger headaches, says Sheena Aurora, M.D., the director of the Swedish Headache Center, in Seattle. A pulse-point balm with aromatherapeutic ingredients, like peppermint, can help, too. Try Bath by Bettijo Relief Organic Stick ($18.50, bathbybettijo.com). Roll it onto your temples and the back of your neck.
Keep in mind: Stretching also improves poor posture, another possible cause of headaches.
